Updates

Two separate logs. Collatorium is the tool itself. The test archives are the projects it is being built and tried on; each keeps its own record in its own Box folder.

Collatorium — the site

DateVersionWhat changed
2026-11-05v3.82Reorganised like the big product sites: one menu everywhere — Product (Overview, Prepare, Trial, Transcribe, Visualize, Corpora, Places) · Sample project · Resources — with your own pages (Dashboard, Your setup, Progress, Your connections, Team) on the right, and a full site map at the foot of every page. New Trial stage: plan your review as a picture (team with a PI, who reads each document) and a short trial run. Prepare now covers metadata and trackers.
2026-11-05v3.81A sample project: every signed-in page — dashboard, collection, viewer, progress, your setup, your connections — filled with a small public-domain example (two Lovelace letters to Babbage, made-up readings), no account or Box needed. Main page: “Explore a sample project” and a one-line overview of the stages. Photos can no longer be zoomed out smaller than the page.
2026-11-05v3.80Collection page: a Prepare block (photos, rules, accounts, Transkribus, log, Box, review plan) with gold ticks; every step shows real numbers from the collection's files (leaves read, outlines, close-ups, spots ruled, images signed off). Viewer: “Type the lines” — type straight into any line; the original never changes. Team members who have only the Somerville folder shared can now connect it directly. Earlier Somerville answers now show under the PI's name.
2026-11-05v3.79Try it uses a sharper image: Lovelace to Babbage, Ockham, 10 July 1843 (BL Add MS 37192, f. 362). About: the OED senses of “collator”, including the punched-card machine.
2026-11-05v3.78Try it: every viewer tool on a real letter (Ada Lovelace to Babbage, 1843, British Library, public domain) — no account or Box folder; answers stay in your browser. The main page is one screen. Corpora and Try it come early in How it works. "Inspiration" is now Origins; Why the name is on About.
2026-11-05v3.77How it works has a side menu listing every part — Prepare (set up, plan your review), Transcribe (each block, checks), Visualize (steps, three ways in, corpora, places, the network) — and Why weaving. Your own pages have their own side menu. Visualize: a network of people and letters on a sketch map of Great Britain, with a year slider. Lovelace progress now follows the ALE tracker. The wide sign-up strip on the main page is gone.
2026-11-05v3.76Visualize: a moving map instead of the three panels — people travel between places as the years run, letters fly between them, rings show home, city, country, abroad. Play, pause or drag to any year.
2026-11-05v3.75Visualize: "Lives, letters, places, time" is now three linked views — a network of who wrote to whom, a map of where letters went, a timeline of when — after Palladio and Mapping the Republic of Letters. Choose a person or a year and all three follow.
2026-11-05v3.74Two versions of every How-it-works page: the general explanation (under How it works) and your own, filled in from your Box folder (Your setup, Progress, Your connections). How it works comes first in the menu. Fewer numbers: the stages are Overview, then Prepare · Transcribe · Visualize. "Why Collatorium" — the name, Lovelace and the loom — on the main page. A clearer Lives, letters, places, time chart.
2026-11-05v3.73Inspiration: the watercolour portrait of Ada Lovelace (Science Museum Group), with its credit.
2026-11-05v3.72Transcribe in four blocks: Images · AI reading (every machine reader together, in cycles) · Human review (rounds set by your review plan) · Finish. Dashboard, collection pages and Progress use the same blocks. The How it works menu lists the three ways in (Corpora, Places, Timeline); on Visualize they come straight after the steps, with your own collections shown separately.
2026-11-05v3.71How it works is easier to find: a drop-down in the menu (Overview, Prepare, Transcribe, Visualize), a clear stage bar at the top of each of those pages, and a Next button at the foot.
2026-11-05v3.70How it works in three stages: 1 Prepare (set up, and Plan your review), 2 Transcribe, 3 Visualize. Transcribe shows its four steps (Images · Read · Decide · Finish) as cards; choose one to see who does what, in the same style as "Many readers, people decide". A plain timeline replaces the abstract drawing on Visualize.
2026-11-05v3.69Simpler layout. How it works is one place with two tabs, Transcribe and Visualize (plus an overview); the separate Transcribe, Checks and Why weaving pages are folded in. Plain words for every step; weaving is now a light nod — a small sketch of a loom that weaves on the About page.
2026-11-05v3.68Saving made sturdier after an independent check: an interrupted save no longer blocks later saves; if Box cannot list a folder, saving pauses instead of showing nothing; changing your reader name finishes the previous reader's save first (rotation marks included); unsaved click-log rows survive a reload; the Review tab warns when a file cannot be read and no longer re-reads every file on each click.
2026-11-05v3.67Saving never overwrites: every save is a new file in your folder, and all of them are read back together. If Box cannot read a file, saving to Box pauses and your work stays in the browser. Brought back: "Many readers, one record"; the tagline "Weaving patterns from the page."; Process, Corpora and Places in the menu; a Feature check link.
2026-11-05v3.66Dashboard opens on All collections; choose one archive to see it on its own.
2026-11-05v3.65Clearer hierarchy: the thread strips now appear only where the two activities are introduced (main page panels, How it works); the Transcribe, Visualize and Checks pages show their steps as numbered blocks. The moving shuttle removed. Why weaving: the loom sketch's labels no longer cut off.
2026-11-05v3.64Plain names in the menus — Transcribe, Checks, Visualize — with the weaving words underneath (dress the loom · weave the cloth · draw the pattern). "Connect your archive" replaces "connect your folder"; setup now means sharing your photos and signing in to your AI accounts. The "and back again" text replaced by a shuttle that glides back and forth between Transcribe and Visualize (main page and How it works). How it works: Shuttling and Why weaving are full sections, not a side note. Why weaving: a labelled sketch of a Jacquard loom. Main page: new opening line; the gold wave is static. About: the "met and enhanced" sentence now cited to Note F (checked against the text in Box).
2026-11-05v3.63The archive is described as the grounding of the work, not as something fixed: archives grow, are reordered and decay, so each photograph is kept as a dated record and new material is woven in beside it. New "Archives change" section on Why weaving.
2026-11-05v3.62Two parallel names for the two activities: Weave the text (people and machines transcribe the archive together) and Weave history (the texts drawn into a network). The gold wave is back before the top line of the main page.
2026-11-05v3.61Main page panels lightened: white with a fine border and a short violet or gold thread at the top edge. The second activity is now Weave. Its page opens with the same kind of strip as Transcribe: four threads (people, letters, places, time) that meet at three steps — Gather the threads, Tie the threads, Draw the pattern — with who does what. Quality: the three parallel lines replaced by the same two-thread strip, Tested · Logged · Checked.
2026-11-05v3.60One weaving metaphor, used the same way everywhere: you are the weaver and the AI is the shuttle in your hand. Step lines made parallel: Dress the loom · Lay the ground · Choose the pattern · Finish the cloth (Transcribe), and dress the loom · weave the cloth · draw the pattern (How it works).
2026-11-05v3.59"Compose" renamed Connect (Compose kept as a metaphor to develop later). Main page: the two activity panels and the sign-up panel are softer — light violet and light gold tints, rounded, without hard borders.
2026-11-05v3.58Main page made minimal again: the damask figures in the loom removed, and the small motif before the top line is back to the plain gold rule that slides in once.
2026-11-05v3.57Dashboard: one collection at a time by default (each archive is its own world), with a switch to "All together" for your whole body of work; your choice is remembered on this computer.
2026-11-05v3.56Main page: in place of the single sprig, small damask-like figures (sprig, quatrefoil, lozenge, rosette, a note, a numeral) appear among the loom's threads and fade, one or two at a time, staying where they arise. How it works and Transcribe: the plain-weave strip replaced by two gently waving threads, side by side, that meet at each step.
2026-11-05v3.55Wording: "People and machines weave the readings" and "history becomes woven". "View" renamed Compose — drawing the threads together into the patterns you see: patterns are made, not just found. The Inspiration page is now "Why weaving" in the menus.
2026-11-05v3.54Lines no longer twist like a double helix: How it works and Transcribe now show a strip of plain weave — gold and violet threads passing over and under the warp. The small motif on the main page is the same weave. The diamond figure in the loom replaced by a small gold Victorian sprig (stem, two pairs of leaves, a bud), drawn in fine line. Sign-up moved up, just below the opening.
2026-11-05v3.53Fewer "stages": Transcribe and View are two activities that feed each other, not numbered stages; the back and forth is called shuttling. Inspiration: Stoppard's Arcadia as a model of past and present, back and forth.
2026-11-05v3.51–3.52Inspiration: "An instrument, not a replacement" — Lovelace on music (Note A), the instrument and the weaver's shuttle. The two parts are now one word each — Transcribe and View — with the weaving in the line beneath; the menu item Connections is now View. Transcribe now has two pages: a simple one (four steps on one woven line — Prepare, Read, Decide, Finish — who does what in each) and "Transcribe, step by step", which repeats the same four steps in detail. New Inspiration page: Ada Lovelace, the Jacquard loom, her Note A sentence on "brocaded stuffs" and "weaves algebraical patterns", brocade, and what the weaving words mean here, with sources. Main page: the gold wave became a small static woven motif (a gold and a violet thread crossing); one small gold brocade figure appears in the loom.
2026-11-05v3.50The gold rule on the main page is now a short gold wave that draws itself in. How it works made simple: one woven line, 1 Set up (dressing the loom) · 2 Transcribe (weaving the cloth, back and forth) · 3 Weave the historical network (the pattern appears), with a thread running back again; a "Back and forth" section — the network changes how the pages are read, and each reading changes the network; a short "Why weaving?" note on brocade. Moved: "Many readers, people decide" and "What you get" to Transcribe; "What is new" to About. Transcribe stages carry light weaving subtitles.
2026-11-05v3.49Two stages, each with its own page: Stage one, Transcribe (the step-by-step page, menu "Transcribe") and Stage two, Weave the historical network (with its own How it works). How it works is now the overview of both. Stage maps redrawn as curved, woven thread in the style of "Many readers, people decide", and made general (fewer, broader steps). Tagline kept on one line.
2026-11-05v3.48Weaving as the word for both parts: Part one, Transcribe — weaving people and machines into one reading; Part two, Weave the historical network — weaving the sources back into the history around them. Each part numbered 1–3. "Two networks" replaced by "Collatorium weaves twice".
2026-11-05v3.47Floating numbers, letters, notes and flowers removed from the main page; the gold rule now slides in and catches the light once. All charts in the style of "Many readers, people decide": thin lines, no black blocks, no arrows. Where lines meet, each line has its own station circle, joined like a tube-map interchange. How it works is now only the nuts and bolts; the "Two networks" diagram and the Lovelace quote moved to About (as a simple "one, then two" line). Connections illustration: letters end in a dot, not an arrowhead. Read map spaced out so labels no longer crowd.
2026-11-05v3.46Tagline now "Weaving patterns from history’s pages." Process drawn like a tube map: your team's gold line and the AI's violet line run together through an interchange where work passes between them; single-side steps are station ticks; at Read the AI line splits into Transkribus, supplemental models and the foundational model, joining again at Compare. New wording: foundational model (Claude, for our projects) and supplemental models; "blind" removed everywhere. New Quality page: the tests, the checks and what every log entry keeps. How it works: four stage maps; a lighter tested / logged / checked graphic; "Where things live" became "What you get" (files and software). Main page: numbers, letters, notes, flowers and leaves appear on the loom's coloured threads and float up.
2026-11-05v3.45Two parts, each with its own steps: Part one, Transcribe (connect, read and compare, rule and keep) and Part two, Weave the historical network (collate across archives, link people, places and dates, see the network) — on the main page and the Process page, with what is built and not built marked. Lovelace epigraph shortened to begin "…the value of an analytical resource".
2026-11-05v3.44Process: no more arrows — your team's line and the AI's line come together where work passes over, then part; after you sign in once, the AI sends the prompts to the supporting models. New "Plan your review": choose how many AI systems, how many AI passes (each with a different lead) and how many people read each document (at least two, optionally one more where the AI systems disagreed); Collatorium works out who reads what and can save the plan to Box as a new file. How it works framed as two networks: who reads the archive, and the history it reveals. "Weaving" renamed Connections. Dashboard: Your team as a network (people, collections, AI systems), with Add someone (name, role, profile link, optional photo saved in Box; the earlier team list kept as a copy). About: the Collatorium team (placeholders). Main page: numbers, notes, flowers and leaves drift out of the weave and fade.
2026-11-05v3.43Gold: a short gold rule draws in once before "The world's archives, read together"; the gold gradient on "from the page" removed. Main page doors labelled Read and Connect. How it works: Lovelace's "met and enhanced" sentence as an epigraph; new section "Tested, logged and checked — at every step" with a stage-by-check grid and the shape of a log entry; "Who does what" replaces "Two threads, woven". Process: under each stage, Tested / Logged / Checked; the chart's base line now reads TESTED · LOGGED · CHECKED. "Model families" reworded as models from different companies.
2026-11-05v3.42Main page shortened: 1-2-3, then two doors — How it works (the work) and Weaving history (the connections) — then sign-up. New Weaving history page: an illustration of lives moving between places over time, letters between them, meetings and world events; three ways in (Textual · Geographic · Historical); across archives; your own collections when signed in. Corpora and Places now sit under Weaving instead of the top menu. Process: two strands that keep their colour — your team (gold) and AI (violet) — with grey hand-off arrows; Read branches into handwriting recognition (Transkribus), supporting models (ChatGPT, Gemini) and the lead model (Claude, for our projects); Decide shows a proposed human-reader route (Reader 1, Reader 2 blind, PI or specialist, two full read-throughs). "From the page" turns gold once on load; the gold line under the wordmark removed.
2026-11-05v3.41Process: each of the four stages drawn as its own small weave — your steps (gold) and the AI's (violet), the thread passing between them; at Read it branches into three readers and rejoins at Compare; a record line under every point; click any point for detail. "Before you start" shows what you do and what the AI then does. New: a model trial, where each model takes a turn in the lead on a sample (being built). Collection checklist: "Accounts linked", "Transkribus linked". How it works: full width; Read stage chart; View in context as three overlapping spheres. Main page: earlier line restored; positive notes under 1-2-3; spheres; a gold thread under the wordmark. The last stage is now "Finished text".
2026-11-05v3.40One style throughout, taken from the main page: paper, black ink, hairline lines, violet and one thread of gold — no pastel fills. Main page reframed around weaving and connections; new "View in context" (textual · geographic · historical); "read together" in gold. Process back to the four-phase cards, with the three readings shown running at the same time and a Recorded / Checked strip under each phase. How it works redrawn: two processes side by side (the work, and its record and checks). Corpora rings redrawn as hairlines. New Conversations page (layout preview only, no letters yet). The v3.39 branching flow was retired.
2026-11-05v3.39Process drawn as a branching flow: images (load → rotation → detail shots) split into three readings side by side (primary AI, Transkribus, blind AI readers), which join for comparing, re-reading and human review, then the edition; tracking and checks drawn as a layer running under every step; click any step for its detail. Stage 4 is now "Edition". v3.38: Two kinds of page, kept apart: explaining (How it works · Process · Corpora · Places — also linked from the main page) and yours (Dashboard · Progress). New How it works page (one page, many readers; what is new; around the page; where things live). Dashboard now shows your collections, where they stand, people, your corpora and your places. Process: "Before you start" as six picture tiles; each collection page shows the same six as a checklist with links to fix what is missing. v3.37: colours after the light, bright drop-down chips of a spreadsheet (purple, blue, red, orange, green, cyan with dark text); onion bands in those light colours; Places ordered small to large, old to new: Buildings, Historical maps, Modern map. v3.36: Process page: who does each step (AI · Transkribus · Human · PI chips); click a step for what it involves, needs, records and checks; "Before you start" checklist (photographs in Box, rules and sign key, readers assigned in their own systems, Transkribus account, project log, connect); tracking and mistake-checking shown as running through every step; step 11 renamed "Edition and record". v3.35: Team & tools grouped by kind, each with its own colour: machine readers, research tools, reference works (OED, ODNB, The Peerage, Wikipedia), period dictionaries (separate from the OED), infrastructure. v3.34: the logo goes back to the main page (signed in); Dashboard lists only your collections; Corpora has its own page with an exploded onion and what each collection has in each layer; Places page (historical maps first, then the modern map); new Progress page — every box and step as a coloured grid, with buttons that open each project's Excel logs in Box; People on each collection page with Wikipedia and Oxford DNB links. v3.33: corpora drawn as layers of an onion: Personal (own writings) at the centre, then Library, Social network, Period, General; rings link to what exists, dashed where not built yet. v3.32: Process page: the eleven steps drawn large in four coloured phases, each with what goes in and what comes out; menu grouped — Collections · Corpora, Places · Process, with Team, Help, Updates set apart on the right; header no longer squeezed on full-height pages. v3.31: no gradients anywhere (tagline plain violet); home lists Corpora (Personal · Social network · Period · General) and Places (Modern map with Google Maps links · Historical maps); menu Collections · Corpora · Places · Methods · Team · Help · Updates. v3.30: quieter and more colourful: one-line header (reader name and font moved into a small menu), short viewer tabs (Rotation · Read · Readers · Review · Progress · Earlier · About) and one More menu; collection page reduced to a compact list of steps in four coloured groups; colour per collection; "How this works" moved out of the viewer onto the collection page.
2026-11-05v3.28Reorganised around collections: a clean "Your collections" page; each collection has its own page splitting the work (11 steps in 4 groups — Prepare the images, Read, Decide, Keep — rotation check first, then detail shots) from ways to look at the material; viewer shows where you are (Your collections › collection › step) and its tabs follow the order of the work.
2026-11-05v3.26Collections (library explorer, corpus network and Venns, counts, "read with care" notes) and Historical maps opened as their own sections; Team & tools page; Updates split into site and archives; Feature check retired from the menu (its results are kept in Box).
2026-11-05v3.22–v3.25Landing page and signed-in site separated (the signed-in site lives at /app/; old links redirect); About page; logo and wordmark in Literata; Feature check page used to audit every earlier tool.
2026-11-04v3.0–v3.21Landing page designed: wordmark, tagline "Weaving patterns from the page.", loom, how-it-works steps, sign-in card.
2026-11-04v2.9Photos in online-only folders open only on click, with a time-out, so an undelivered cloud file cannot freeze the browser.
2026-11-04v2.4–v2.8Leaf editor sub-tabs (working copy, AI compilation, uncertain spots, focus), word and letter stepping, sources and reader layers per line, blind re-reader letter ratings, spot and line boxes; Classic page tab runs an archive's earlier page unchanged with data from Box; progress dashboards from a project's own tracker.
2026-11-04v2.3Review tab (every reader's answers and open flags), optional calculations module for archives that carry arithmetic, filters and sorts by AI certainty, tracked-changes view, follow-the-line, resizable divider, per-leaf citation.
2026-11-04v2.0Folder-local design (nothing hosted but the viewer), IIIF manifests, home and info pages, viewer with five image views, rotate, close-ups, word and line correction, flags, history, rotation check, process, engines, progress and about tabs; team sign-in by emailed code.
